Festival of Ideas: Dialogue on Democracy! - Launceston

Event date: 15 November 2008
Type: Festival
Location: Launceston, Tasmania
Cost: Free

Do you think we are living in a democracy?
How should an effective democracy work?
Do you want to know more?
Are you passionate about issues?
Do you want to have your say?

Here is your chance to be part of a dialogue on democracy. Join us at Launceston's Inaugural Festival of Ideas on the 14th and 15th november 2008. The Premier, the Hon. David Bartlett, will open the festival on friday afternoon. There will be a cocktail party on friday evening at the Academy of the Arts at Inveresk.

This will be an opportunity to mingle with a cross section of the Tasmanian community - people who care about the preservation of democracy. Four prominent community members will take to 'soapboxes' to express their views on the state of democracy in Tasmania. The audience will be encouraged to interact. There will be something for everybody ... fun, food, films and music!

The festival continues on the Saturday and all sessions are free. This is not a 'talkfest', but you will be able to be part of the discussion of ideas and challenges for the future of democracy in Tasmania.

Activities for young people will include an essay competition for year 11 and 12 students with a $500 prize and a year 10 project designed to build a capacity for democratic practice amongst students in their school.

Film screenings will run through the festival featuring the premiere of '18 short films about democracy' by students of Tafe Tasmania's screen production courses.

The soapboxes will continue to be a feature on the Saturday. Have you ever wanted to get on your soapbox? Well here is your chance! The fun will continue with music, food and lots of exhibitions, we look forward to seeing you there!

This is an Evatt Foundation initiative in collaboration with the University of Tasmania and supported by the Premier of Tasmania, the Hon. David Bartlett MHA. Be part of the inaugural Festival of Ideas, the first of it's kind in Tasmania!
