Australia walks with the world against the war

09 December 2002

Details for the big weekend of action.

Event location: Assemble Hyde Park North, Sydney
Event time: Noon

"There's never been a time that I can think of when there's been such massive opposition to a war before it was even started ... What is not pointed out in the press coverage is that there is simply no precedent, or anything like a precedent, for this kind of public opposition to a war."
- Noam Chomsky, Guardian, 4 February 2003

President Bush's continuing threat to invade Iraq has galvanised the world. In Australia as elsewhere there is strong public opposition to the proposed invasion, and to Australia's military involvement. With Australia's Howard government, along with the UK's Blair government, supporting for the Bush adventure, the reserve dates for emergency protest action have been activated - here and around the world. Globally, the 15th and 16th February 2003 promise to be the largest days of anti-war protest in world history.

Sydney walkers will assemble at Hyde Park North at Noon on Sunday 16 February. The walk route is a circuit via King St, George St, Park St, Elizabeth St and back to Hyde Park North. Scroll down to find details for other demonstrations around Australia and the rest of the world.

The Sydney speakers so far confirmed include John Pilger, Laurie Brereton MHR, Senator Bob Browne, Rev Ray Richmond, John Howard (the actor), Senator Lynn Allison, Ms Randa Khattam (Aust-Arabic Communities Council), Ms Genan Dadoun (Muslim Womens Assoc), John Robertson (NSW Labor Council), Anna York (Walk Against the War Coalition).

The central contacts are: Bruce - 9386 1240; Hannah - 0418 668 098; Nick - 0409 762 081, or visit the website of the Walk Against the War Coalition.
