News: Conference
Crunch Time12 March 2009A major Sydney conference of Australian think-tanks on the future.
Be part of the first major conference of Australia's leading think-tanks. At the halfway mark of the Rudd Government's first term, we invite you to join us in considering the principles and values that should guide policy-making into the future. For the past three decades, governments have relied heavily on markets to achieve their goals, favouring short-term economic considerations over long-term public benefits. The global financial crisis has raised serious questions about the efficacy of market forces and the balance between economic growth and social and environmental sustainability. The Prime Minister has pronounced the neoliberal era dead. Governments around the world are directly intervening in markets on a scale rarely seen before in history. The parameters of public policy-making are once again uncertain, and effectively up for grabs in a way that they have not been since the 1970s. This two-day event presents a rare opportunity for a major open discussion about the challenges that governments in Australia face and the direction in which they should turn. The array of speakers from here and overseas include... John Falzon St Vincent de Paul Society, Garry Weaven Industry Funds Management, Larissa Behrendt Jumbunna House of Indigenous Learning UTS, Richard Denniss The Australia Institute, Ann Pettifor Advocacy International UK, Clare Martin Australian Council of Social Service, John Connor The Climate Institute, Cheryl Kernot Centre for Social Impact, Jeff Lawrence Australian Council of Trade Unions, Senator Ursula Stephens Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion, Steve Keen University of Western Sydney, Marian Baird Sydney University, Gabrielle Kuiper Labor Environment Action Network, Frank Stilwell Sydney University/Evatt Foundation, Emma Partridge Institute for Sustainable Futures, David McKnight Journalism and Media Research Centre, Julian Disney Community Tax Forum, May Miller Dawkins Oxfam International, Sarah Hanson-Young Greens Senator for SA, Jane Caro Public Education Advocate, Bruce Petty Cartoonist and social observer ... and many more!
