EventsReconciliation: the way ahead - an Evatt conversationThe Evatt Foundation presents a conversation between Mick Dodson & Henry ReynoldsProfessor Mick Dodson is co-chair of Reconciliation Australia and the 2009 Australian of the Year. In his speech to the National Press Club in April 2009, he challenged the notion of practical versus symbolic reconciliation: "I want to do my best to put an end to the misguided notion that reconciliation comes in two discrete and opposing forms - practical, meaning worthwhile and effective; and symbolic, meaning near enough to worthless". Professor Henry Reynolds is an eminent Australian historian whose primary work has focused on the frontier conflict between European settlement and indigenous Australians. His latest book, co-authored with Marilyn Lake, Drawing the Global Colour Line (MUP), won the 2009 Prime Minister's Literary Award for non-fiction and has been hailed as a model for the new global history.The conversation will be in the Sydney Trades Hall Auditorium, 4 Goulburn Street Sydney (enter via Sussex St). The Big Pictures: privatisation & prisonsWe are pleased to announce the screening of Business Behind Bars. This film is about one of the most powerful and recession-proof industries today. As overcrowding intensifies in Australian prisons, governments are turning to the private sector to manage and own correctional facilities. This film takes an inside look at the private prison entrepreneurs who are paving a new future in the Australian correctional system and for the prisoners in their care. For those who wish to participate, after a short intermission, the film will be followed by a panel discussion led by Professor David Brown from the University of NSW. A regular commentator on criminal justice issues, David has co-authored or co-edited 10 books; published 26 chapters in books, and over 100 articles in journals and in published conference proceedings. The film will be screened in the Sydney Mechanics Institute, 280 Pitt Street. The date is Thursday 25 March. The time is 6 p.m. Entry is by donation.
Other infoThe Tolpuddle Martyrs: Injustice within the lawThe Evatt Foundation has received a new stock of the new edition of Herbert Vere Evatt's history of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. Elegantly published by Sydney University Press with a new introduction by Geoffrey Robertson QC, the book marks the 175 years since the transportation of the Martyrs to Australia. Everyone in the labour movement will want this fine work.
