Frank is Professor Emeritus in Political Economy in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Sydney, where he has taught since 1970. Previously a lecturer in economics at the University of Reading (England), he is a well known critic of conventional economics, and an advocate of alternative economic strategies which prioritise social justice and ecological sustainability. He was elected Vice President of the Evatt Foundation in 2014.
Frank is also the co-ordinating editor of the Journal of Australian Political Economy and he serves on the editorial boards of the journals of Regional Studies and Australian Options. He is the author of twelve books, including: The Accord and Beyond, Economic Inequality, Understanding Cities and Regions, Reshaping Australia: Urban Problems and Policies; Changing Track: A New Political Economic Direction for Australia (Pluto Press, 2000; Who gets what? Analysing Economic Inequality in Australia (Cambridge University Press: 2007); Political Economy: the Contest of Economic Ideas, third edition (Oxford University Press: 2012); The Political Economy of Inequality (Polity Press: 2019). He is also co-editor of four books, including Beyond the Market: Alternatives to Economic Rationalism, and Economics as a Social Science.
