National Insecurity: The Howard Government's Betrayal of Australia

On the eve of APEC, the Evatt Foundation presents speakers on the most arresting political story of the past decade: the reckless trampling of Australia's interests in one sector after another by a government that vigourously promotes itself as the guardian of national security. Pulled together for the first time in a meticulously researched new book by Linda Weiss, Elizabeth Thurbon and John Mathews, this story is little known and scarcely believable.

Seeking to tie its own political fortunes to its great and powerful friend, the Howard Government has contracted to transfer the farm, and much, much more, to America Inc. Pursued with disturbing enthusiasm, the government's devious decisions have effectively undercut Australia's security, furture prosperity and cultural values.

Following up on the Evatt Foundation's public lecture by Paul Keating on APEC, this seminar will probe the extraordinary details of how Australia's national interests have been systematically undermined by its own Prime Minister, and offer a compelling explanation.

"A stunning exposure of the way the Howard government is selling out Australia to the United States and why."

Linda Weiss is Professor of Government and International Relations at the University of Sydney and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Elizabeth Thurbon is Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences and International Studies at the UNSW.

John Mathews is Professor of Strategic Management in the Graduate School of Management at Macquarie University.

"I do not believe for one minute that the Government understands or knows what many Australians feel in their minds and hearts about this country. We are too close to the United States. We do not have to be that close to maintain the alliance and to be a good friend. We do not wish to be submerged by an all-pervasive, all-powerful United States or by global forces."
                 - Malcolm Fraser

This scholarly exposure of the myth of the Howard government's security-enhancing credentials is not to be missed.
